The Fond du Lac Family YMCA is pairing up with the Downtown Fond du Lac Partnership to promote a healthier community as the proud sponsor of this year’s Double Days program. Through this program, FoodShare recipients make purchases at the Downtown Fond du lac Farmers Market and are matched up to $10. Double Days takes place on the first Saturday of the month in July, August, and September. The first Double Days market will be July 4.
With 15 percent of Fond du Lac County residents utilizing FoodShare Wisconsin supplemental assistance, the Double Days program offers greater access to fresh vegetables and fruits to lower income families. Additionally, this program serves to alleviate the lack of access to supermarkets within walking distance of those who live in the downtown area. The downtown area of Fond du Lac has been labeled as a food desert and consequently people living in that area have less access to healthy foods sold in stores such as Festival and Pick n Save, both located on the outskirts of town. A food desert is considered by the United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA) an area of consensus track ½ mile to 1 mile from the nearest supermarket in urban areas.
In order to receive the Double Days deal, FoodShare recipients must swipe their card with the Market Manager at the Information booth on the corner of 2nd and Main, each time they visit the farmers market. By doing this, customers are helping to track usage and promote the success of the program.
Fond du Lac Family YMCA is the second member of the Living Well FDL Coalition to sponsor this program, with the United Way serving as the first Double Days sponsor in 2014. Building a healthy community through better nutrition and active living has been identified as a priority for Fond du Lac County in the Fond du Lac County Community Health Improvement Plan 2020. The Living Well FDL Coalition serves this priority area.
The Downtown Fond du Lac Farmers Market is sponsored by Agnesian Healthcare and United HealthCare Community Plan, and is a program of the Downtown Fond du Lac Partnership. The DFP has implemented the Double Days program to help combat the food deserts as well as obesity in our community. The Market is open every Saturday from 8 – Noon on Main Street and on Wednesdays from 11 – 3 on Main Street Plaza. In addition to cash, both of these markets accept EBT, credit and debit cards.
